This is absolutely extension fodder, and FlashGot is a pretty good example of this type of thing.  Its not something that really fits into a mass market browser as a default component, however.

In fact, until now I use wget, but somtimes I have to work on M$windoof-PCs and then what?

Why not? The people can use it or can ignore it, but when I work at the university or in a library there is fortunately often installed firefox (and not only ie) but i really miss something like wget on that windows-PCs... (And there isn't installed FlashGot or any ather tool, I suppose...)

One of the objectives of the Firefox project is to make a streamlined browser without the fluff. A frontend for wget is something not many people would use (how often do your average person download whole directories of stuff?), and therefore is better off as an extension.
