Got "Software Error" when trying to attach some specific text file I am just wondering to know whether there is limitation for attaching file for bugzilla..... when I was trying to attach some specific text file (about 6MB), I got a "Software Error" message.....
tara@tequilarista.org is the new owner of Bugzilla and Bonsai. (For details, see my posting in netscape.public.mozilla.webtools, news://news.mozilla.org/38F5D90D.F40E8C1A%40geocast.com .)

Anybody taking care of this problem yet?
I believe the bugzilla.mozilla.org installation of bugzilla will choke on attachments bigger than 1 megabyte. It's a MySQL thing; this is mentioned somewhere in Bugzilla's README file.
If this is bugzilla limitation, shouldn't it display the message to let users know the limitation instead of just get the "software error" message?
it is a mysql thing. and it's not something that can be displayed in a bugzilla form because it's a command line argument to the mysql daemon at start time. basically. marking as won't fix, because there isn't a good way of fixing this.

Is there any way of informing the user of this problem as a possibility on _any_ error that occurs when you try to attach a file?
Just for completeness, the error message generated is: Software error: insert into attachments (bug_id, filename, description, mimetype, ispatch, submitter_id, thedata) values (34320,'MacMozillaInstaller.sea', 'testing multiMB attachments to get the error message', 'application/octet-stream', 0, 10297, '<<10.7 MB of data omitted>>'): MySQL server has gone away at globals.pl line 134, <STDIN> chunk 34324. I agree, that's not something we can easily trap. verif. wontfix

justdave: Is there a way we could break up attachments that are too large for MySql? Or maybe there is some other way we can send the data to MySql - ie: write it to a file and then tell MySql to open the file and copy it to the attachments.
I don't think timing is the issue. From experience writing other mySQL apps (some are text-based command-line driven shells) mySQL doesn't time out and go away after a while. Something triggered it. In this case, probably the query it too big for it to handle or something so it "hangs up" on the caller mid-query. You probably could read in a file, but how do you know when to do so? We don't know how big the file is until after it's been uploaded.
See also bug 59390 "Abort large (>1MB) attachments before uploading and with a reasonable error message".
