This afternoon I have made modifications to the preferences dialog, specifically the tabs section, to provide a working UI preference for the tab close buttons setting (browser.tabs.closeButtons). Screenshot and patch coming up.

As pointed out in your previous bug, there won't be UI for this in the preferences dialog. You may wish to create an extension with your changes and upload it to addons.mozilla.org instead.
