It would be great if there was a version of the activity log page which showed the comments (whichever ones are visible, at least).  

At my last company, we implemented this by showing the first line of the comment by default, and providing an "expand/collapse" icon (+/-) which one could click on to show the full comment (using JS).

It worked out really well, and makes the activity log so much more useful, since you can actually get some context about when things were changed.
We are going to do it the opposite way, i.e. showing the activity in show_bug.cgi.
