I ran across this yesterday in Camino on the 18branch and just verified it also exists in Josh's new UniCocoafox.
When Roman characters are enclosed within <font face="Symbol"> tags, the characters are supposed to be Roman, not Greek; an "a" is an "a", no matter what the font.
Carbonfox, Safari, and probably all other Mac browsers excluding IE get this right.
Testcase to follow.

Note that this isn't working properly in Cairo platforms either (I don't know that there's a bug for it though).

We need to figure out what changed at the very least -- and then decide whether we want to leave it as-is or special case it or what.

I just tried this in Camino 0.8.4 (Gecko 1.7.8), and it worked OK.
I won't have time for a while to run through old Caminos between the 1.7 branch point and (presumably) the 1.8 branch point and see when this regressed in Cocoa widgets....

Actually, this broke (both on trunk and 1.8 branch) sometime after 1.8 branched, since the first Camino build from the 1.8 branch displays the testcase properly

This works in 16 Nov 2005 trunk.
It broke in 17 Nov 2005 trunk.
I suspect the checkin for bug 213702 revealed the bug, but I sort of doubt that checkin is responsible for the bug itself.

This bug is mentioned in a few places in that bug. It seems like bug 213702 comment 11 might have a handle on why it's happening, although I'm not sure why it's only Cocoa builds that are broken....

This is fixed on trunk. Still broken on FF2 though.
