blank pages whenever I go to Amazon (Refreshing multiple times can often)

scott putterman writes:

"Either ever since I upgraded to 1.5 (I'm on 1.5.0.4 ) or I got a new computer
(a Dell XP 400 running XP Home) I have been unable to use amazon.com in
Firefox. The majority of the time, I get blank pages whenever I go to Amazon
or attempt to navigate through the site. Refreshing multiple times can often
make the page show up."

spinning this issue off from bug #335909. I don't want to lose track of this, as others have seen it (there are a couple unconfirmed bugzilla bugs that are very similar.)

Scott has tried a build with (and without) the fix for bug #335909 and he can still reproduce this.

I'll attach his NSPR logs.

darin, please let me know what I can do to help here.

scott's able (and willing) to help as well.
Keywords: regression
scott writes:

"1.0.8 doesn't work for me either. So, it's not something new. I wonder if there's something about my machine's setup that is causing this one site not to work?"
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1b1) Gecko/20060806 BonEcho/2.0b1
Can't make it fail, whatever I try.
not a regression, since scott sees it with 1.0 as well as 1.5 and a recent 2.0 build.

still looking...

Summary: blank pages whenever I go to Amazon (Refreshing multiple times can often) → blank pages whenever I go to Amazon (Refreshing multiple times can often show the page)
update: putterman tries with a brand new profile, and he still sees this issue.
I'm worried about this bug, as I think it is a serious "barrier to entry" (to quote mconnor) with Firefox.

putterman just upgraded to Fx 2, and he still sees it.

I searched reporter.mozilla.org for site=amazon.com and found the following:

from
http://reporter.mozilla.org/app/report/?report_id=RMO11581136107481
"didn't load the pages . showing blanks. have to refresh buttom reload again."

from
http://reporter.mozilla.org/app/report/?report_id=RMO11601012684795
"when a link is clicked it has to be reloaded several times before the page lads"

from
http://reporter.mozilla.org/app/report/?report_id=RMO1160278429641
"For some reason whenever I view pages on amazon I have to reload the pages a few times before I can get the page to actually load. I will hit reload and in the corner it will say Done and I have to do this multiple times before it loads. I do not understa"

from

"Trying to access account. Nothing. It works with explorer"

"will not load"

won't display but works in IE

the more interesting one is:

from
http://reporter.mozilla.org/app/report/?report_id=RMO11578670967669:
"I just reported that no Amazon sites were displaying in FFx. Not the case. Pages that have account info and/or shopping info don't display. PLEASE FIX IT & THANKS!"

I'll follow up with putterman to see if he is seeing something similar, and also check the forums.

fwiw, in http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=459714&highlight=amazon+blank, some people have reported that disabling their anti-virus software makes the problem go away.
concerning:

"I just reported that no Amazon sites were displaying in FFx. Not the case.
Pages that have account info and/or shopping info don't display. PLEASE FIX IT
& THANKS!"

Scott writes back:

"I logged out of my account and then tried and it still didn't work, so I don't think it would have to do with my account info."

He's going to try disabling the firewall and anti-virus at a later time.
using adam judson's very cool "Tamper Data" add-on (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/966/) I noticed that Firefox set the "Accept-Encoding" header of "gzip, deflate" and amazon.com returns the initial html page with Content-Encoding gzip.

I wonder if the gzipped content is not getting "blocked" by the anti-virus software?
putterman writes: "I disabled both anti virus and my firewall and I still hit the bug almost immediately."

I have had this same problem since Firefox was updated to the newest Version. I have contacted Amazon and they told me multiple times it is Firefox and not their website.
From the forums:

"Older versions of McAfee (I am using Internet Security Suite 7.0) have the problem. Log on to Privacy Service as Administrator and there you can add allowed sites. Just enter in www.amazon.com and your problems should be gone. All this time I thought it was Firefox. Shame on me!"
