Do you mean the search from the context menu, or from the searchbar? If from the searchbar, are you using Alt+Enter, or are you setting the browser.search.openintab pref?

from searchbar and
browser.search.openintab / true
only enter, not using alt+enter.

input text, then click enter/glass open result in new tab, foreground,
like check-on "When I open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately"

now search-result is opened in background (tab).

this bug is on Firefox 2 only, so this should be "WONTFIX" ?
