In safari the OS X services menu items work fine.  You can highlight a word and use the lookup in dictionary command from the services menu or select text you are composing in gmail and use a GPG encryption service.  In firefox (1.5.06) none of the text manipulation services seem to be enabled.

Note this is different than bug 104331 which asks that firefox provide it's own services (as I understand it) so one can highlight urls in other applications and have them open.
