I've been keeping up with Places bugs fairly closely for quite a while by following the Places component, but now that I've come across this bug, I'm curious--is this an aberration, or do I have to watch the Bookmark component too, if I want to keep on keeping up?
You do not have to watch the bookmarks component, the new ui implementation will live under places.

We may diverge from the existing bookmarks UI in the future, once firefox 3 plans become more solid.

Is there anything else left to do here?

the only bug blocking this right now is bug 373500 (live titles in menus and trees).

retargeting bugs that don't meet the alpha release-blocker criteria at
Target Milestone: Firefox 3 alpha6 → Firefox 3 beta1
targeting this tracker bug in a more general fashion. at this point, it doesn't serve a purpose to track it against a specific milestone.
Target Milestone: Firefox 3 M7 → Firefox 3
M8 == UI complete
Target Milestone: Firefox 3 → Firefox 3 M8
this was a tracker for implementing the *old* UI on top of Places. as all it's dependencies are fixed, marking this fixed as well.

Bug 451915 - move Firefox/Places bugs to Firefox/Bookmarks and History. Remove all bugspam from this move by filtering for the string "places-to-b-and-h".

In Thunderbird 3.0b, you do that as follows:
Tools | Message Filters
Make sure the correct account is selected. Click "New"
Conditions: Body contains places-to-b-and-h
Change the action to "Delete Message".
Select "Manually Run" from the dropdown at the top.
Click OK.

Select the filter in the list, make sure "Inbox" is selected at the bottom, and click "Run Now". This should delete all the bugspam. You can then delete the filter.
