Details
The behaviour appears to be broken. If I have multiple windows open,
then trying to close the last tab on *any window* just redirects me
to about:blank. This means I am forced to use the mouse (!) to close
windows.
It should only happen for the last window firefox has open.
See bug 236721 that implemented this behaviour.

What's wrong with Alt+F4 and Ctrl+Shift+W?
Furthermore, having Ctrl+W behave differently depending on how many windows are open might just confuse those users who don't track the number of open windows.

It's called "RSI".

In that case you've got the further alternatives to
* hide the tab bar when only one tab is open (which makes Ctrl+W close the window again),
* install an extension to revert to the former behavior (the usual answer) or
* use the keyconfig extension to make a one key shortcut (e.g. F4) to improve the situation for yourself.
