Penelope needs the ability to change the status of a message to ANY status, not just read or unread. Should be able to set status to: Unread Read Replied Forwarded Redirected

Don't forget the sending side: Sent Unsent Sendable Transfer Error Especially, it should be possible to change status between from the received statuses (read, unread) to "sent" (manually and from filters) - very handy to make messages Bcc:-ed to myself (like those sent from a mobile device) look and sort the same as messages sent locally. See Bug 366799 - but I think that's not a real duplicate of this one, as it specifically addresses changing mails to "sent" in filters.

And, in the opposite direction -- changing from sent to received: I regularly use Eudora to archive clips I make of my postings to web forums and others' responses to my posts so I have a record of these communications in the same place with my emails. I'd like to be able to un-italicize (as well as mark as read) "emails" I make of others' responses so they look like they had actually been emailed to me by the party I put in the Who field. As I read it, this is consistent with the first sentence of the bug description.

Please let me know when this is implemented. The inability to change the status from read back to unread is driving me crazy!

Thank you for this technique. However, you can't do it directly from the drop down menu, which, of course, would be a lot easier and there is no keyboard shortcut, which would be even easier.
We also will be implementing Shift+Space as a toggle between read and unread, just like in Eudora.
You already have keyboard shorcut for that Press "m" and the message will toogle from status read to unread (or unread to read) Others shorcut exists: (See menu Message --> Mark) M --> Mark as Read/not read R --> Mark thread as Read/not read C --> Open a dialog for Mark as Read following a Date rule Ctrl-Shift-C --> Mark all Read/not read S --> Add Star (Don't know what it is ... see no change when pressing s ...) J --> Mark as Junk Shift-J --> Mark as not Junk
Sorry, need to mention this is in Thunderbird 2.0 Maybe the penelope extension remove that, but it exists (the Mark menu exist also in the drop down menu)

This is the case in Eudora 6.2 for the Mac. So I'm not sure what it is that doesn't work in Eudora.
For those with initiative, this bug is fixed in the Penelope hg source code depot: <http://hg.mozilla.org/penelope/rev/9aca3d03bc5b>. Otherwise you'll have to wait until the next release, Eudora 8 beta 8/Penelope 0.5a5. As of the above change, Message->Change->Status now works. Thunderbird doesn't support the Redirected, Sent, or Unsent states, so those items have been hidden. When the menu first pops up it will have the menu item radio button set for the status of the first selected message.

As of 8.0b7, the only method (of all those listed in the comments) to change the message status (other than automatically Unread->Read as set in Preferences) is by using Shift-Space. The keyboard shortcuts don't work, and the Menu selection to change the status gets a JavaScript "Unimplemented" dialog (although the correct status is "checked" when revisiting the "Message->Change->Status menu. Any way to get the additional statii (i.e., the ones that Thunderbird doesn't understand) enabled (even if they are disabled by default for your average user) ? Lastly: I've got some initiative, I want to help make Eudora 8 as useful as "classic" was (and, for me, still is), and want to get back into writing code (it's been a few years!) Where are the instructions/guides for getting involved ? Is "http://hg.mozilla.org/penelope" the correct URL for the repository ? What other pieces am I going to need ?

Of the statuses (statii??) listed in Comment 11, only "Read", "Unread", "Replied", and "Forwarded" are available (same as Thunderbird). This applies to the "Sent" folder (and, I assume, "Drafts") as well; Jeff says TB doesn't support "Sent" or "Unsent" so those options have been hidden.
