The address bar should support a similar feature to bash (or the GTK file chooser, or I'm sure dozens of other things) where ctrl-backspace deletes first the file, and then directories off a path.
For a URL, something like this may be the way to go:
http://www.example.com/foo/bar/baz.phpt=207858

http://www.example.com/foo/bar/baz.php
<crtl-backspace>
http://www.example.com/foo/bar/
<crtl-backspace>
http://www.example.com/foo/
etc.
