A User space application such as Firefox can't freeze a modern OS like Windows XP.
Such a freeze can only be caused by a kernel mode driver (such aas the graphic card driver) or a hardware fault.

I use AVG anti-virus free edition. Lately and without warning if I run Firefox 2.0.0.3 and a virus scan at the same time my PC freezes and requires a cold boot. Firefox works fine otherwise and so does AVG. They don't play well together. I noticed this after upgrading to version 2.0.0.3. This did not happen before the latest release of Firefox. The PC was sluggish when the virus scan was running before the upgrade.
