the browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs preference in about:config doesn't work anymore. All of the extra options are gone from the preferences menu. This is a regression wrt Firefox 1.5.*

Reproducible: Always
Um, no. That pref didn't do anything in 1.5, because the "Force links" UI was always shown anyway, and it's still shown, Tabs panel, "New pages should be opened in" (which combines the old "Open links from other applications" and "Force links that open new windows"). The only difference is that if you want the destructive option, same tab, then you have to learn to use about:config to set browser.link.open_external and/or browser.link.open_newwindow to 1 yourself, or if for some reason you want different behavior for external links and target="_blank" links, you have to set them differently in about:config, but those weren't regressions, they were intentional changes: see bug 340677 and the linked newsgroup discussions.
