The sidebar that integrates with the main TB window includes a calendar view and a task/agenda view - the inclusion of the calendar increases the amount of real estate required quite significantly.
On my 1024x768 display, roughly half (or maybe a bit more) of the sidebar is taken up by both the calendar/agenda, with the bulk of that being the calendar.
An option to collapse or remove the calendar aspect of the sidebar whilst keeping the agenda would be a large gain in terms of real esate.

You already can customize Lightning to do this, see Bug 363421 Comment #2.
