There are a number of things that you just can't do between two tabs within the same window in FF. i.e. dragging a URL from the location bar and dropping it within a text area being composed.

Therefore, I often find the need to move something I have opened in a tab to a new window by itself. Currently I have to type control N, drag the tab to the window, then close the original tab.

It would be a nice enhancement if you could right click on the tab and select a 'move to new window' function.

This works in the latest trunk build so the function will be included in the next milestone, Firefox 3.0.
You can try this out: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/
About the problem mentioned in the summary, maybe you mean Bug 113934?
In that case you can resolve this bug as a duplicate of Bug 113934.

I disagree that this is a duplicate of bug 113934. After reading that bug description it appears that it is asking for the opposite function, to take one of two windows and drag it to a tab in another window.

What I am asking for is to take an existing tab and move it to a standalone window. This should be far less complex to implement and not dependant on the other request.

I agree This bug is a duplicate of bug 225680 as the problem is stated with the proposed solution.

However, the original problem statement:
There are a number of things that you just can't do between two tabs within the
same window in FF. i.e. dragging a URL from the location bar and dropping it
within a text area being composed.

is really a new bug if this would work between windows. It currently only works if you drag the link to a new window. I will open a new request for this.
