As with the creation of a new product, a new chart category is made ( see bug 364246 ), and the selection is done in a 'small' select-box, this is difficult to use when you have a lot of products.
It would be better if, for all automatic created charts for products, you have a classification pre-select box. (like you have on the query page).
Of course, this should be synchronized with the actual situation (not like now: renaming a product makes the dataset invalid)
Reproducible: Always

Are you talking about old or new charts? If it's about old charts, this is not something we are going to do, per bug 232113.

To be clear: you are asking for a "Classification" box to be added to the chart.cgi page (e.g. http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/chart.cgi )?
If so, that would be rather complicated. For better or worse, charts are rather wedded to the three-level hierarchy. I agree that chart auto-creation could be improved, though.

indeed, this is about http://landfill.bugzilla.org/bugzilla-tip/chart.cgi
Well, the problem is that for each new product there is a item created with the same name (but unlinked) as the product in the first level of charts, which is category.
So, if you have a lot of products (> 100) , you have a very long list with categories.
For the same reason classification was introduced, this could be also useful for the charts page.
PS: indeed, the chart auto-creation is maybe the first thing to be improved. But that's not the scope of this enhancement, imho.

But if the first block were classification, the second block were product, what would the third block be? Would we have it as the series name (e.g. "NEW") and throw away component-level tracking? Or would we have it as the Component name, and only track one set of data per component?
You can't shoehorn a 4-level hierarchy into 3 levels without having problems somewhere. My view is that the least worst option is to leave Category off (as we do now), given that Product names are still guaranteed to be unique.
I appreciate that 100+ products is unwieldy; but it's unwieldy everywhere :-) You can always change the UI to increase the size of the box, if that helps.
