Using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl-K is supposed to put the cursor in the web search box normally in the upper right corner of Firefox. However, something has happened to mine (and a few others throughout the internets): Ctrl-K now causes Firefox to go to Google's Firefox Start page instead of putting the cursor in the search box.

One temporary fix is to right-click the toolbar area, choose customize, remove the search box and then add the search box back to the toolbar. This fixes the Ctrl-K behavior until the browser is restarted (at least in my case... I believe that it has permanently fixed others' similar issues).

What else can I provide to highlight the problem? I don't tihnk the "Steps to Reproduce" will recreate the problem for many people. But it did start happening with FF2.0 for me.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open Firefox
2. Press Ctrl-K

Actual Results:
Firefox Start page at Google loads instead of putting the cursor in the search box

Expected Results:
The cursor is placed in the web search box
Component: Keyboard Navigation → Search
QA Contact: keyboard.navigation → search
Works for me, Firefox 2.0.0.1 and trunk on Windows XPSP2.

Maybe you have installed an add-on that binds CTRL+K to something else?

Does it work if you start Firefox in Safe Mode? (it temporarily disables
plugins and add-ons, this test will help us narrow down the cause of the
problem) -- See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_Mode
First stop for me was to remove FF, reinstall and create a new, clean profile (with things like bookmarks.html and formdata copied from the old profile). So far, Ctrl-K has been working as designed.
In case you didn't know, you can have several profiles:

Most likely it was an add-on that stole the shortcut.
Please add a note in this bug if you find out which add-on it was...

Um, no. The reported behavior is what we do when the search bar is removed from the toolbar by customization, so the bug of unknown origin is that something was causing us to not find it even though it was still there.
The description fits with a add-on registering CTRL+K. Removing and adding
the search toolbar will register CTRL+K for it again - I believe the last
registered element wins which would make it work...
