Details
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-GB; rv:1.8.1.1) Gecko/20061204 Firefox/2.0.0.1
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-GB; rv:1.8.1.1) Gecko/20061204 Firefox/2.0.0.1
When trying to type www.ebay.co.uk or other, it hangs as soon as I push the "e" button at www.e !! Clean version with no add-ons other than standard installation, no other programs running. XP with SP2 installed and regularly updated.
System hangs, I kill it, get error report options from Windows and then I can restore the session and continue so long as I don't want to visit anything beginning with an "e"! Bizarre.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Open Firefox
2.Delete contents of location bar
3.Type "www.e"
Actual Results:
System fine, but Firefox hangs. Windows kills it and it can be restored but bug not fixed following restoration.
Expected Results:
Allowed me to type entire web address.

WFM, Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.1) Gecko/20061204 Firefox/2.0.0.1
Are you able to reproduce in safe-mode? (see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_Mode)

Yes, started in safe mode with run->firefox -safe-mode->continue in safe mode.
It still hangs at www.e
I realise you know how safe-mode works - it's just in case I did it wrong!
This isn't the biggest problem for me as I can use IE for e-sites(!) but thought it might be useful to others to know.

OK, I would then suggest trying with a new profile (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder) and if the hang still occurs, a _real_ new install of Firefox (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_%28Firefox%29#Clean_reinstall)
I hope that helps.

My guess is that you have a lot of history entries beginning with domains starting with 'e' (e.g. ebay.com) and it's taking a while to search through them. How long do you keep your history for? Also, does this bug go away when you clear your history?
That said, I experience the same bug on Windows trunk and could not find a duplicate of it. I keep my history for 30 days, FWIW.
