Anthony: Can you clarify if this happens on XP as well, or only Vista? And which fields are you typing these characters in? thanks.
Marcia: yes it happens on XP as well as on Vista, but the time delay before the bug appears under XP is much longer. According to this thread ( http://forum.mozilla-russia.org/viewtopic.php?id=13104 ) some Firefox users have this bug since 15th of October 2006 and even under XPsp1.
I'm observing same behavior using Central European characters such as ššććđđžžčč. Having FF 2.0.0.3, Windows XP sp2. On all input fields, also address line, search bar, FF options, ... I can't remember how it happened, but I just recently reinstalled the Windows XP, and used Google Browser sync to move configuration to new system. A obviously also moved the double ššđđćć :(
The problem could be solved by starting one IETab. While IETab is opened duplicating characters bug is gone, but closing IETab causes bug to come back. It's not very comfortable, but it works.
I have a similar problem using Central European characters, but it's also connected with attaching a file in both Thunderbird and Firefox Steps to reproduce in Thunderbird on my machine: - open thunderbird - preview any message with attachment / open a new message and add attachment - special right ALT characters become doubled (ąą alt+a) (żż alt + z). Also (€€ Alt + u) becomes doubled, but suprisingly (ó - alt+o) is the only character unaffected. Steps to reproduce in Firefox: - open firefox - enter any website based mail account - create a new message and add file attachment - from that moment characters become doubled in every Firefox window. Unfortunately im not sure of the cause of that bug. I'm running XP proffesional SP2. No major updates in recent week. The problem started about 5-6 days ago. When the "double character" bug is activated in Thunderbird it does not appear in Firefox and vice versa Closing browser and opening it again returns characters to normal Uninstalling both Thunderbird and Firefox (with profiles) does not help, same problem. The bug is not reproduced on IE6, Word 2002 or OpenOffice 2.1 running on my machine.
Ok. I found a solution to my problem. The cause was a little piece of software installed recently Shedko Badges, http://eng.softq.org/badges.htm After uninstalling everything is back to normal.
Just to let you know this issue is also present on 3.0RC and all previous 3.0 betas. It is very annoying, specially if one uses web pages with lots of manual text entry, such as web e-mail, Bugzilla...
to increase the chances to reproduce this bug the following actions are necessary. for mozilla firefox (2.x and 3.x): to download some file with using of built-in download manager with destination directory path containing russian (cyrillic) symbols. optionally to save file with custom filename containing russian (cyrillic) symbols. than try to type something inside some web page. web application as gmail can be used. for mozilla thunderbird (2.x): to create new mail message, insert attachment - some file located in directory path containing russian (cyrillic) symbols. optionally file can contain russian (cyrillic) symbols too... i met this bug so many times in mozilla applications that discovered the single permanent rule of this bug: it comes when file system interection takes place, especially if cyrillic (rus, ua, etc.) symbols are used in file system (names of directories and\or filenames). p.s. the problem is still alive and continue to shock all mozilla firefox users including those who use the latest stable or beta builds. all of them contain this bug, i checked everyone of them. but as to thunderbird mailclient it seems to me that situation is better cause i didnt notice this bug since 2.x-versions.

Not blocking on an unconfirmed bug. Please see http://support.mozilla.com for help narrowing down the cause. If the cause is external software (such as mentioned in comment 6) then this is not something Firefox could even fix.

(In reply to comment #10) > Not blocking on an unconfirmed bug. Please see http://support.mozilla.com for > help narrowing down the cause. If the cause is external software (such as > mentioned in comment 6) then this is not something Firefox could even fix. the cause of the problem is not external software, thats internal bug of russian mozilla firefox 2.x-3.x. just a little bit more information. all users that report me about that problem run firefox under operating systems: windows xp pro sp2 rus (32bit), windows xp pro sp3 rus (32bit).
(In reply to comment #9) there is one more variant to make firefox ддввооииттьь ррууссккииее ссииммввооллыы! so now we have two various ways of the bug reproducing. 1. file saving. download any file from internet with saving it to new file location, containing cyrrilic symbols in file path e.g.: %userprofile%\ммооии ддооккууммееннттыы\ннооввааяя ппааппккаа. after that try to input smth on google search page or any other one on russian and you will get double letters. 2. file opening. upload any file to internet (user pic for forum or smth else) with opening file from location containing cyrrilic symbols in file path e.g.: %userprofile%\ммооии ддооккууммееннттыы\ннооввааяя ппааппккаа. after that try to input smth on google search page or any other one on russian and you will get double letters. now this bug is easy to reproduce. if you have some questions for additional information i'm ready to provide it. thank you for your work and have a nice day.
(this is russian translation of comment #9)

Today my colleague has reported similar problem. She is using Thunderbird 24.4.0 and she composes emails in Polish and Russian languages. The duplicated characters problem concern all Cyrillic characters and some Polish characters ('ąą', 'ęę') but not all (eg. 'ó' is inserted correctly as single character). After restarting Thunderbird, the problem disappears. As for now, I don't have a scenario to reproduce this bug. E.g. adding an attachment to composed mail isn't enough to reproduce the bug. My colleague uses Windows XP Professional with SP3, Polish edition.
