I would like the Mozilla Foundation to register the domain "publicsuffix.org" and connect "www.publicsuffix.org" to some webspace or a CMS where a small website could be set up. Whatever software is used would need to allow pretty much total control over the content and style (so not a wiki). CVS-backed would be fine. I need to give access to this website to three volunteers who are going to help put it together, so whatever access controls are in place would need to allow that. (So, for example, it can't require having a www or code CVS account.) Redirection of email to certain addresses (submissions@publicsuffix.org) would also be required. The purpose is the maintenance of the Public Suffix List, a.k.a. the Effective TLD List, which is used on the Firefox trunk to support the Effective TLD Service. http://wiki.mozilla.org/Gecko:Effective_TLD_Service http://wiki.mozilla.org/Gecko:Effective_TLD_List ("Public Suffix" is the public name; "Effective TLD" is too politically charged.) This is going to be done on an "independent" website because the data is made available under a liberal license to all browser makers. Let me know if any part of this request will pose a problem. Gerv
To clarify: Let me know if any part of this request will pose a problem... before starting doing any of it. Thanks :-) Gerv
Marking this confidential because the domain will get swiped by a shark before we get to it if it's publicly known we plan to get it. Never mention a domain name you plan to purchase in public. :) The domain sharks are nasty. We can open the bug as soon as the domain is registered.

OK - thanks :-) Gerv
We have the domain locked up, now let the cms debate begin :)

Wow, that was quick! We could probably get away with installing something like WordPress and use it to manage the site - that way, we don't need any CVS/www/backend access or anything similar; only a login username and password for the CMS. The site will only be 3 or 4 pages: a homepage, a page with examples and the email address, a page explaining the list and the list itself. All Mozilla has to do in this case is do an installation of WordPress, which will take just a few minutes and set up a few accounts, then we can take care of the rest. One thing I'm not sure of is what style the website will use. It seems like it's going to be somewhat independent of the Mozilla website due to the liberal licence, but after all it is a Mozilla project. Should it use the normal Mozilla style, a derivative or something completely different?
Wordpress does sound like the correct solution to this problem given the description from Ruben. If this is what everyone agrees on I will set it up.

It should use its own style. Mozilla project people are running it now; that doesn't mean that will be completely the case in the future. If Wordpress can be configured to not be a blog, I guess that would be fine. I don't think a blog-style front page is appropriate here. We want a website something like http://www.cabforum.org in size, style and form. We _definitely_ need proper versioning and diff for the list itself. But we can probably store it in mozilla.org trunk CVS and link to it there via mxr from the website. Gerv
So is this pretty much just static content? If so we might be better off just going with html out of an svn repository.
HTML out of svn would be absolutely fine with me. Right tool for the right job. Gerv
Domain is registered, waiting for content. Once content is in svn, please reopen for deployment.

Justin: could you perhaps give details of the SVN server, and how we might go about giving people accounts on it? :-) Gerv
Sure - once you have content ready to go, either reopen this bug or open a new one with the users and ssh keys of who'd you like to have access. Then just commit to the svn repo, we'll pull from there and publish to your domain.
OK, I'm in uni halls at the moment but I'll be going home the weekend after next and I'll whip up a simple page template and some content. How's that sound?
Ruben: sounds good, unless one of the other guys has some time before that. Let's make is smart and simple :-) Gerv
Great. Smart and simple it is!
Hi Justin, I've now finished the core website and would like to upload it to Mozilla's servers and make it available at www.publicsuffix.org. My SSH key is available at http://www.wackomenace.co.uk/download;sshkey.txt Could you also please set up two email addresses: contact@publicsuffix.org and submissions@publicsuffix.org. You could set up redirects to gerv@mozilla.org at the moment until we decide how redirects will be handled. Thanks very much

Before we can let you check in to SVN you will need to fill out a CVS contributer form and send it in. http://www.mozilla.org/hacking/form.html After that is done please file an IT request for a new SVN account. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=mozilla.org&format=itrequest
Jeremy: in the initial comment, I said: > Whatever software is used would need to allow pretty > much total control over the content and style (so not a wiki). CVS-backed would > be fine. I need to give access to this website to three volunteers who are > going to help put it together, so whatever access controls are in place would > need to allow that. (So, for example, it can't require having a www or code > CVS account.) This was to avoid the need for getting super-reviewers, vouchers etc. Does Ruben merely need to fill in and send back the form, or do we also need to find such people? I would hope that if the only place this account will work is in the SVN tree, that admin could be avoided... Gerv
Just submitting a CVS contributor form will do. He will not need super reviews.
Depends on: 376626
Ruben now has permission to check into anything under svn.mozilla.org/projects/publicsuffix.org/trunk To learn how to use mozilla's svn repository please read http://wiki.mozilla.org/SVN
Please let me know when you have copy of the site in svn and I will stage it.
All uploaded to SVN and ready to stage.
(In reply to comment #16) > Could you also please set up two email addresses: contact@publicsuffix.org and > submissions@publicsuffix.org. You could set up redirects to gerv@mozilla.org at > the moment until we decide how redirects will be handled. DNS has been set up, websites are pointing at a temporary IP, and probably don't work. The IP can be fixed once there's actually a website staged somewhere to point them at. MX records point at our primary mail relays. Mail service has been set up, contact@ and submissions@ both forward to gerv@mozilla.org
Site is up at publicsuffix.org
