When there is a new update, the update downloads, tries to install, fails, and gets caught in a never ending loop and I eventually have to uninstall mozilla.

Here's the error message:

"One or more files could not be updated.  Please make sure all other applications are closed and that you have permission to modify files, and then restart Firefox to try again." - Software Update Failed"

This sounds like a duplicate of bug 340535.
You can disable update under Tools->Options->Advanced->Update as a workaround for this problem.
