I have stayed up for a few hours trying to get Firefox running normally again *** Description: Mozilla Firefox Session Restore has a limit it seems. The more you use Firefox, the more likely this will effect your surf. Cause: When the Session Restore files reach 9,999, it for some reason starts freezing Firefox intermittently while surfing. I may be confusing these ".js" files for something else, but it does say "sessionstore-#.js" with # being an actual number. Resolution: 1.) Close all instances of Firefox. Use task manager to end all instances if there are any. 2.) Go to your profile folder, found by following "Documents and Settings" => "Application Data" => "Mozilla" => "Firefox" => "Profiles" => "[YOUR PROFILE NAME]" folders in Windows. Tip: For a shortcut to the Application Data folder in Windows XP, click "Start" => "Run" and type %APPDATA% and press Enter. 3.) Search for the session restore files. The file names start with "sessionstore" then a number and the file type ".js", all in your profile folder. If there are many and maybe even 9,999 like mine, then delete them, little by little to prevent Windows from freezing. If your system can handle it, go ahead and delete all of them. After that, just restart Firefox. Please email me if I am totally wrong. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Have 9,999 sessionstore files or have sessionstore-9999.js in a profile. 2. Start Mozilla with a profile and with Session Restore on. 3. Surf Actual Results: Firefox freezes and lags throughout the whole time surfing. Firefox especially lags when surfing to a new site or just normal input or scrolling. Session restore may be constantly trying to create a new instance. Expected Results: Start Firefox normally. Given that session restore uses safe file output streams, this behavior (multiple numbered session restore files) probably indicates that it's unable to write the session file to disk. Is there anything about your profile that would cause that? Is sessionstore.js read-only or otherwise protected?
There is nothing unusual about my profile. I check the sessionstore files and they are not read-only either. My computer did have an error yesterday and I continued to run Firefox. My computer tried to Hibernate when I was away, but it failed because it lacked system resources. Everything was normal until I closed Firefox and restarted. It updated an extension (search auto sizer I think). Then it began to lag. That's it though. What was weird was that all the .js files were all created the same time. After deleting all of them, everything is normal. There is still just one sessionstore file.
