Rather then end up duplicating a bunch of effort, let's make sure this is coordinated well with the thunderbird team. I think they're starting to think about how to take thunderbird to the next level.

I'm involved in a project attempting to move SFX forward. I want to talk briefly about STB and SFX. I don't want to confuse you or reduce any momentum you guys have. I really want to help empower you with tools, information, or both.

SFX software is FOSS, so STB could start as a copy of the SFX software with a different domain name and theme.

Whether or not STB uses SFX software, several upgrades that are due this year may be relevant to STB.

The Tags upgrade empowers SFXers to tag as they see fit, and I expect to see SFXers apply TB related tags. I think there's a good chance that this tagging and the resulting tagged content will become key resources for STB, especially if STB nurtures such tagging.

The Groups upgrade empowers SFXers to organize themselves, and I expect to see a TB Group. SFX admins would want an STBer to run that Group. Moreover, if STB has sufficient energy, the TB Group could gain Official Project status. And if that worked out well enough for STB, it might prefer not to have its own site.

In summary, I'm involved in SFX, see lots of possibilities, and want to help empower and coordinate with STB.

I like the idea of first starting STb as a project to see what kind of support and momentum it can get, and then move on to SpreadThunderbird.com (or perhaps a new name) if the project is successful.
I'd hate see an official Mozilla backed project fail. It wouldn't look good for Mozilla and it would set Thunderbird's image back a bit by people viewing it as a product that no one is interested in. 

I do my best to post Thunderbird related content on Spread Firefox but there really isn't much interest or response. In my opinion, the obvious part is that visitors (mostly young) come to discuss Firefox, and the right people (Tbird users, developers, etc) are not visiting SFx to brainstorm on how to promote Thunderbird.

If they had their own venue, I believe that there would be enough people to get behind a spread Thunderbird initiative. There is a great need to power up some Tbird marketing campaigns instead of Thunderbird being a side dish to Firefox if you will.

I'll fully commit to helping out in any way that I can whether it be a Thunderbird project, or its own web site.
