comprehensive automated tests for software update (nsUpdaterService.js and updater.exe) I think benjamin has actually written a few of these (least for updater.exe/updater.app/updater) already.

There are quite a few of these now and there is a patch in bug 451085 will add tests specifically for testing the applying of mar files
