User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-GB; rv:1.8.1.6) Gecko/20070725 Firefox/2.0.0.6
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-GB; rv:1.8.1.6) Gecko/20070725 Firefox/2.0.0.6
This is kinda hard to say in words.
On updating the program, the older version of Firefox doesn't get removed or overwritten. For example, I updated the 2.0.0.5 version to 2.0.0.6 but the earlier version didn't get removed.
So in the "Add or Remove Programs" in XP or "Programs and Settings" in Vista, you can find TWO Firefoxes, the older one and the updated one.
Its like two different versions of the same browser is getting installed into the computer. The update is getting treated like a new software instead of a patch!
And this has been there for quite a while, right from XP, but only after the version 2.0 got released. I thought it was only a minor bug and you guys will fix it up, but I guess wasn't reported to you yet.
Not sure from which exact version this bug started to occur but I reckon its 2.0.0.3 or 2.0.0.4 or something.
Personally, I've got no problems as I can uninstall & reinstall it and reset the settings etc. but other users who dont know that can be done will face problems.
By the way, this problem also takes up double or triple the space required (as the older versions don't get removed) and has to be fixed ASAP!
Priority: Above Normal
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Update firefox.
2. Then go to "Add or Remove Programs" (Windows XP) or "Programs and Settings" (Windows Vista)
3. There will be two programs named Firefox, the older version and the newer one, instead of only the updated version.
Actual Results:
There will be two programs named Firefox, the older version and the newer one.
Expected Results:
Only the updated version should have been there, overwriting the older version.

i have the same two entities in Vista, i get Firefox 2.0.0.5 (no icon) and Firefox 2.0.0.6 (with icon) but old files were cleaned up correctly, i have only 2.0.0.6 files on the disk while the older entry is probably wrong (but only the entry in the registry)... Are you sure that files are doubled?

No I dont think the files are doubled. It was only an assumption that the space used up is doubled or tripled.
About the icon, I'm still getting it over here for both versions, except that 2.0.0.6's icon seems to be "more suitable" for Vista's graphics. Its in the screenshot I attached above and at http://files-upload.com/413434/Screenshot.jpg.html
By the way (if this info is useful in any way), when I uninstall one, both of them get removed.
So I have to either:
1) Copy the folder to another location, uninstall the older version and paste the folder again to preserve my settings, extensions etc.
2) Uninstall firefox, download the latest version manually, install it and reset my settings & extensions to what I had originally.
Thanks

They are pointing to the same install and the previous versions uninstall registry entry is not being removed which is bug 389244. For some odd reason we are getting a short path in the uninstall reg keys.
Note: uninstalling the app does not remove settings and it won't remove extensions unless they have been installed globally which is seldom the case.
