Using 2000-05-12-10m16 commercial builds See related bug #39121 Menu item Empty Trash should be disabled when an IMAP account is selected which has its delete mode pref set to Remove Immediately. I'm using 4.x behavior as my basis. 4.x disables the menu item immediately upon confirming the pref change to Remove Immediately.

per mail triage: remove nsbeta3 nomination and move to future milestone. For the short term, we will combine items here into three bugs (in 3pane) to address for nsbetat3: 1. delete, change text, move menuitems; 2. enable/disable and text changes on context (dynamic); 3. accelerator keys to work. When this bug gets revisited after the first release, we'll need to see what items remaining that need to be addressed.

Is this target milestone still Future? We should disable this menu item earlier......

reassigning to ssu. Yes, it's still future. If you think it shouldn't be, then you should nominate it for reevaluation.

Should this item really be disabled? I notice that I have plenty of stuff in my trash and yet I've got my prefs here set to Remove Immediately. I either changed it at some point or I have different work/home prefs, but either way, it's possible and easy to have stuff in your trash regardless of your mode.
It's not whether there is anything in your trash, it's whether Empty Trash is valid for that certain IMAP delete setting. I don't believe it's a valid command when you have delete immediately (or mark as deleted) as the setting.

I think it makes sense to remove the "Empty Trash" command when using "delete immediately". However, when using "mark as deleted", Thunderbird should provide a trash folder which shows the mails marked as deleted in all folders, and "empty trash" should compact the folders to make those messages go away permanently.
