User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.5) Gecko/20070713 Firefox/2.0.0.5 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.5) Gecko/20070713 Firefox/2.0.0.5 I click "Help", "Check for Updates", pop up says update to 2.0.0.6 is available, I click "Download & Install". Windows pops up - "Your update was successfully downloaded and verified, and it will be installed the next time Firefox starts" I click on the "Restart Firefox Now" button and it restarts, but "About" says it is still version 2.0.0.5 I have same problem with THUNDERBIRD as well. When I tried downloading fresh from mozilla.org, and installing it, I get an error on install that says C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\Thunderbird.exe or C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\Firefox.exe "Error openign file for writing" Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. check updates 2. install updates 3. verify installation Actual Results: I check the version in ABOUT under HELP and the version did not go up from 2.0.0.5 to 2.0.0.6 Expected Results: the software shoudllhave updated
Not security sensitive.
Group: security
I would disagree with Samuel Sider's opinion that this is NOT a security issue. If both applications say that they are updating to fix vulnerabilities, but aren't, that seems like a pretty sensitive security related issue to me.
"Not security sensitive" means "not something that needs to be hidden from the view of most Mozilla contributors, making it much less likely to be addressed." No evil-doer can attack you based only on the knowledge that you filed this bug, no evil can be done based on knowing that some updates will fail other than the evil that can be done anyway, since some people will fail to update no matter what. So, it doesn't need to be marked security-sensitive - particularly when you consider how many people know about bug 340535, of which it's a duplicate.

I'm not sure if this is a duplicate. It sounds like the symptoms that people get when they try to run an update as non-administrators on Windows.
