XUL menus take up almost the whole width of the screen. The usable part is off
to the right side, and only that part is highlighted when you mouseover it. This
appreared in the 5-14 or 5-15 nightly builds.
2000-051608 looks bad. Confirming bug.
Seems to be a fontcode bug, manifesting itself in the widgets.
Raising severity to critical - preferences and menus are next to useless looking
like this - way to big - text goes out of range.
Attaching screenshot sample.

hmm wondering if it's the same bug i'm really seeing here:
Reporter: can you check one of the attachments and see if they are what this bug
is about, then add a comment about it?

I think it's a font related layout bug, and it affects webpages as well.

Eric: This bug now triggers when i use *xfsft* - NOT with xfstt. (see bug 35845)
Also note: The missing scrollbar (bug 39553) returns if i use xfstt instead.
So whatever changes were made, they have some real strange effects AND:
It also affects TT font text in the webpage itself.
The URL in bug 39553 now looks OK with xfstt - and "as always" with xfstt -
exept for the insanely long distance between the fonts.

I removed my fonts.alias for TT fonts but it made no difference.
Sorry about that, should have attached this originally. It seems these are two
separate bugs. :-(
ahh ok - i'm messing up your bug then. I'll file a separate bug on what i see.
Removed erik@netscape.com from CC - this is an xp bug and not layout as my own
attachments indicate.
R.K.Aa, please don't remove me from Cc fields. (Thanks for adding me last time!)

Pav, this seems like a window manager-related thing, but I'm not sure. (I'm
referring to the very wide menus in Decklin's attachment.)
Decklin Foster : what window manager are you using? (I don't see this in
either this morning's verification build, or in my own build of linux -- I
am using gnome + enlightenment).

[changing severity from critical -- that is reserved for 'crashes, loss of data,
severe memory leak']

Is this an xfsft problem? If so, what version are you using? Pavlov, could you
help triage this? I'm not familiar with xfsft, the importance of our supporting
it in PR2, nor any of the wierd problems that are apparently associated with the
version bundled in RH 6.0.
Is xfsft really bundled with RH6? I had a look, but I could only find xfstt.
Sounded that way from
http://www.dcs.ed.ac.uk/home/jec/programs/xfsft/&exp=OneBoxNews

"In version 6.0, the RedHat distribution of the GNU/Linux system is shipped
with a local version of XFree86 that is patched with xfsft 1.0.3p1 (the code is
included both in the X server and the font server)."
Which bug is this covering now? I saw things like attachment 8781 [details] (the original
bug) in my debug build from yesterday, but in today's release build, every time
I click a menu, Mozilla crashes.

BTW, I use xfsft, and I don't see the other (R.K.Aa) bug.
Maybe we should only discuss the original wide menu bug in this report. RKA and
I have started discussing the font issues in bug 39553.

Thanks for the RH6 info.
reassigning to pav for triage.

I downloaded 051608 again -- this still happens under TWM or without a window
manager (I was using aewm).

<mock-indignation-mode type="silly">
Menus *aren't* managed by the WM! they have override-redirect set! Sheesh.
</mock-indignation-mode>

I can't test the regular menus on today's build because clicking on a menu
causes a segfault. (I am going to go see if there's a bug for that.) However,
right-clicking does pop up a context menu which seems to be fixed. So this bug
may be gone already.
The menu segfault was due to some old preferences -- deleted them. Everything
appears to be fixed now with 051808.

The product should not crash, no matter what user prefs are set. Do you happen
to have those old prefs still? It would be good to track this one down.
Menus are fine for me in latest nightly. Marking verified.
