Users get a lot of benefit by registering. It lets them find their previous threads a lot more easily. We should make registering as easy as possible. For users who aren't logged in, we should include a log in form and a registration form on the same page that users can post their question. Registration/logging in should be in the same step as posting the question. We should also include text encouraging people to register.

I'm thinking that we should combine this with the Anonymous user name feature. We need some sort of UI that by default would ask the user to register or log in. Users could say "I don't want to register" and then we would ask them for just a name. As I mentioned before, we need to have registration integrated with creating a new post - they have to be on the same page, if the user name is taken (or whatever), the user should be returned to their new post page with the appropriate fields still filled in, etc.

A quick sampling shows that 40% of users posting in the forum who get a response don't post again. 75% of these users aren't registered, so it's possible that they're not checking back or can't find their way back to their question. I consider this a high priority feature to add. Here's a mockup of what I'm thinking. If the user is already logged in, they wouldn't see any of this stuff; the page would just start with "Briefly (in one short sentence)...". If there's an error with something (wrong captcha, password wrong, etc.) the user should be brought back to the same page with all the information still filled in. Ideally, this would work without JavaScript. The blank hrefs of the links could point to the same page with a special parameter that changes the default view.

This is kind of a refinement bug that seems less important right now than the 0.5 milestone. We should work to find a reasonable priority for it, but for now, I'm unsetting the target milestone.
