1) doing free software builds requires some different settings. Right now, those settings are kept in branched files. Worried that these might drift from the ones used for the branded FF release.
2) Looking at the changes, there are only a few small differences. Is it possible to dynamically create these two files from the versions that were used for the branded FF release?

For 1.8, the branched version is on the MOZILLA_1_8_BRANCH_release_free_software branch.

Does this still worry you, John? If so, should we bother doing anything about it given the recent free software builds discussion?

Having separate mozconfigs is desirable, and moving away from tinderbox to get rid of tinder-config.pl is desirable imho.
This is a one-time hit per branch. and worth it for the meantime.

This bug seems, closable, then? (Especially since it is more a discussion thread)

Closing, because:
- its non-trivial to change tinderbox weirdness.
- discussion about not doing further free software builds in bug#404464
