This seems to be the only letter involved. In small letter size, the space between the "m" and the next letter is too big. In big letter size, the space is too small, in fact "joining" both letters. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Configure your sans-serif font as "suse sans-serif" 2. Go to http://www.slashdot.com/ 3. Look for "m" letters. Actual Results: Letter spacing between "m" and the next letter is wrong. Expected Results: Letter spacing consistent and visually correct. I will post some screenshots in a few minutes.

With the same configuration, Firefox 2.0 works fine.
Bugzilla example: Look at the "m" in the "commit" button or in the text "comment" or "Home". Increasing or decreasing the fontsize (with "+" or "-" keyboard shortcuts) seems to fix the issue. My default fontsize seems to be 16.

Where can one get the suse font that you are seeing the problem with? If you change to another font, does the same problem happen? (Btw, you could also attach your screenshots to this bug entry...)
It is the suse font from SUSE 10.0. I have tons of font aliases, so I am not really sure what is the actual font file :-(. I'm able to follow instructions, nevertheless. Using the SAME font with other sizes, the problem vanishes or can also to go the other way (small kerning instead of large one). PS: If you absolutelly demand that font file, I would spend the time to look for it.

After upgrading my pengo system lib, I can't reproduce the issue. See bug 404112, comment 9. Should be this bug as "invalid", "worksforme" or "duplicate"?.
So, problem was apparently outside Mozilla code -> invalid.
