A message's list of newsgroups in has no spaces, preventing it from wrapping. In a browser window, this long list simply forces the creation of a horizontal scroll bar, but in a mail/news window, strange things happen: The window thinks it's supposed to be very wide, hiding the vertical scroll bar. The message list and/or group list panes are also stretched to the new width. As a workaround you have to collapse the newsgroup list.
