User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.11) Gecko/20071127 Firefox/2.0.0.11
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.11) Gecko/20071127 Firefox/2.0.0.11
Affecting multiple versions of Firefox on WinXP & Vista. Not dependant on websites, nor on usage load.
Intermittently, Firefox will disappear from the screen (almost as though it has been minimised), but is not visible in the Taskbar. Opening the Task Manager shows the firefox process continuing to run, as does hitting Alt-Tab until the Firefox application is selected, at which time it returns to the screen.
This gives the user the impression that Firefox has crashes silently, when it has not so much crashed, but has instead disappeared.
Reproducible: Sometimes
Steps to Reproduce:
There is no obvious pattern which will replicate this issue.
Fault has been experienced on different versions of Firefox, including the General Firefox release, FrontMotion's version of Firefox and Firefox Portable.
Has also affected Firefox running without any Extensions, as well as Firefox loaded with >20 Extensions.
Actual Results:
As above -
Intermittently, Firefox will disappear from the screen (almost as though it has been minimised), but is not visible in the Taskbar. Opening the Task Manager shows the firefox process continuing to run, as does hitting Alt-Tab until the Firefox application is selected, at which time it returns to the screen.
Expected Results:
Continued as normal.

I also encountered this. Firefox was shown in the taskbar initially, but it disappeared after a minute or so. Firefox did not stop responding.
I was using Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9b3) Gecko/2008020514 Firefox/3.0b3.
Experiencing same problem on Firefox 2.0.0.14, Windows XP Home.
No pattern observed, but it happens very regularly. (couple times a day)
The description above is quite right to classify this as critical. Until I discovered I could get my windows back using Alt+Tab, I thought they were silently crashing. Only realized it was still there when I was playing streaming audio, and the audio continued although the window and taskbar icon had disappeared.
Bugs 415868, 408631, and 292571 seem to be related or duplicate.

However, this problem has been encountered with a different mix of extensions, and different installs of FF (ie Portable FF also affected).
I am having a similar issue. Windows XP on a Pentium 4 machine with 512 megs of ram, Firefox 3 release candidate.
Sometimes, some of the windows will disappear from the taskbar, while others will still be shown. The other day I had five windows up but only two had taskbar buttons. I had to use task manager to switch to the other windows and see them again. I have not been able to find a way to consistently reproduce it.
From the about box: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9) Gecko/2008051206 Firefox/3.0 eMusic DLM/4.0_1.0.0.1
This just happened again, though I am now on FF3 RC2, so it's still not fixed. I have screenshots. Attaching a PDF of them.
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9) Gecko/2008052906 Firefox/3.0 eMusic DLM/4.0_1.0.0.1
Screenshot taken right after I noticed the button gone from the taskbar. Brought up a second FF window. Then clicked on original FF window and got button back.
PDF is zipped because it was a few kilobytes over the limit.

...Contd from previous
in Windows XP SP2

I am encountering this bug with Firefox 3.0.5, running on a Dell 420 laptop with MS Windows XP (SP2). For me the problem surfaced when I added a second monitor to my docking station. When I have Firefox on the second monitor, it intermittently disappears from the Windows taskbar. The windows taskmanager shows the process to be still running (I am using that right now to enter these comments), but is clearly not on the taskbar.

Any thoughts on this bug? The behavior described above has existed throughout all 3.0x FF releases.

@Kurt: Comments above suggest that this behaviour still exists in v3. As such, I cannot, in good conscience, change the status to Resolved.

Yes, this issue is always reproducible for me on latest version 3.5.
Initially it used to annoy me thinking I lost all my session.
Now I know how to get back back the hidden Firefox, just Alt+Tab and select to get it.
Thanks,
Santosh

Looks you guys are just hoping that issue somehow will gets resolved on its own, without actually putting an effort to fix it. I say this because I don't see any developer looking for any specific information from any user who reported the issue... lame.
Thanks,
Santosh

Ok, no good. I created brand new profile and after an hour of usage firefox disappeared from taskbar. I'm sending this message from new profile.
After creating new profile I did 4 changes.
1. Add proxy information
2. Disable asking for save passwords
3. add-on FoxClocks
4. add couple of bookmarks to bookmarks toolbar.
Thanks,
Santosh

The point of a new profile is that there are no user modification such as extensions. Please create another one with absolutely no changes. Possibly unrelated, but also update windows to service pack 3

I created another new profile, this time absolutely no changes. The issue occurred after approximately 20 hours of firefox uptime.
However, I haven't updated windows to service pack 3.
