User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; de; rv:1.8.1.11) Gecko/20071127 Firefox/2.0.0.11 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; de; rv:1.8.1.11) Gecko/20071127 Firefox/2.0.0.11 Sometimes, when a hyperlink contains a tooltip (title attribute), on clicking the link, the tooltip won't disappear. It instead remains visible on the same screen location until after the new page is loaded. Sometimes, it can only be removed by hovering it with the mouse or clicking anywhere on the new page. In some cases, the tooltip doesn't already appear on the original page but only when the new page has loaded - then outside of the browser area and even outside of the Firefox window! This happened for many Firefox versions already and can sometimes be seen in Thunderbird, too. I could reproduce it with Firefox 3 beta 2. Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: For testing, any vBulletin forum will do, because they show a preview of the first post in a tooltip over the thread list item. But there are plenty of pages that do this. One example: http://www.heise.de/newsticker/foren/forum-129938/list/ (All links in the list have a tooltip)
Yes, it also happens in Safe Mode with Firefox 2.0.0.11. (Not tested with 3.0 beta 2, but there are almost no extensions and user settings anyway, as that's my virtual box testing installation.)
I've also seen it from the window's own UI controls like toolbar buttons. So the problem is not limited to web page contents. Sometimes, when I quickly hover or click a button and move the mouse cursor somewhere else, the tooltip remains visible somewhere and disappears when explicitly hovering it.
The issue as described in comment 3 is a known bug; Bug 362968.
Yves, do you see the problem firefox 3?
No, I wasn't able to reproduce the described behaviour with the link from above in Firefox 3.0 over a MS RDP connection. (Don't have other access to a 3.0 right now.) Because I haven't seen it now doesn't necessarily mean it's not there. I need more experience with 3.0 to be more certain with this. This requires more of my favourite extensions to be 3.0-compatible.
Still happens in Firefox 3.0.1. (Cross-link: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=782205 )
I see the problem too now (latest trunk, Windows XP) but I'm not sure that this is not caused by some extension. At least WorldClocks is causing a similar problem and it was so irritating that I had to disable it. Tooltip problems are common side effects of many extensions.
If this is so common, wouldn't it be good to solve it at the core? I don't understand how an extension that plays around with some DOM and events can cause such a misbehaviour. If this is possible it seems like an error to me, because it shouldn't be. I can try disabling all extensions, but as I said before: Firefox without my favourite set of extensions is like walking barefoot to work and not having a bag to carry my stuff.
Firefox is developing and extensions should follow the code, not the other way around. Only if the extension developer can't find a workaround, Firefox's code will be reconsidered. Maybe the extension author in question is just unaware of the problem.
It does not come from an extension. I have disabled them all and the problem was still there. My steps to reproduce it 100% of the time: (at least today) 1. Visit the mozillaZine forums in a thread list view, e.g.: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewforum.php?f=38&st=0&sk=t&sd=d&start=244230 2. Put the mouse cursor above a thread link and check if there's a tooltip appearing 3. Click the link (now the tooltip disappears) 4. While the page is loading, move the cursor a bit aside, still over the link (if the page loading takes long enough, the tooltip appears again) 5. Do not move the mouse again Finally, when the new page is loaded, the tooltip is still there. It only goes away when it times out or when it's touched with the cursor, or maybe when the mouse is clicked.
Is there any interest to resolve this really annoying bug in the upcoming version of Firefox?
This bug was originally reported on Firefox 2.x or older, which is no longer supported and will not be receiving any more updates. I strongly suggest that you update to Firefox 3.6.6 or later, update your plugins (flash, adobe, etc.), and retest in a new profile. If you still see the issue with the updated Firefox, please post here. Otherwise, please close as RESOLVED > WORKSFORME http://www.mozilla.com http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Managing+profiles http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Safe+mode

Oh, didn't notice this. It's still there, if you're still interested. This bug was there all the past 7 years and it never left me, whereever I was. It's like a true companion by now. Maybe I'll be missing it if you decide to fix it some day? It affects Firefox 2-37 and Thunderbird 2-31. It must be something that's been around all those years.
