The es-ES dictionary in Thunderbird shows an error in the Spanish word "brevemente", which is a correct word and should not be marked as an error.

says "brevemente" doesn't exist. I've tested other words ending in -mente:

and all of them seem to exist. I don't see a reason either to not accept "brevemente", nor I've found (in a quick search) discussions about wether "brevemente" is a correct word or not.

Anyway, before even thinking on adding the word to es-ES dictionary:

1) The dictionary is actually an XPI repackaging of the OpenOffice.org myspell dictionary (now replaced by hunspell version), so I'd have to check about licenses, and probably I just could *suggest* to OO spanish community adding the word.

2) The quickest solution to this is, of course, just add the word to your personal list. There are a number of valid words not included in the dictionary, and filing a bug here on each and every word seems not the sensible thing to do. The right move, I think, would be to collect a set of valid words not currently present in the dictionary and file a single bug in OO issue tracking system.

In Spanish, ADJECTIVE + -mente = ADVERB

Not all the -mente adverbs appear in the RAE dictionary, but it doesn't mean they are not correct.

Regarding the correct way to report this missing words... I think reporting bugs is the correct way, if a word is missing it should be added (otherwise the spelling checker is of poor utility, as it will confuse the user marking a correct word as incorrect).

Anyway, I checked the dictionary from
"http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/dictionaries.html" and it says it is based on the wordlist of Jesus Carretero and Santiago Rodriguez.

However, it seems that the current OpenOffice.org dictionary IS NOT based on this word list, so maybe you want to update Thunderbird list:

As I said, it is a matter of not filing a bug on each and every word. If that's the only word you have found to be missing, then it is correct to file a bug, but if there is a number of them, then collecting and filing a single bug is more sensible (and seems that the person actually in charge of it thinks the same way [1]).

I can only propose it (and I'm about to do it in a few minutes in mozilla.dev.l10n newsgroup). It is a different bug, though, and if it turns out that filing a bug is needed, then it is something you could do too. :-)

In fact, the dictionary maintained in Mozilla Addons was created by tnarik with the work of Santiago Bosio. It doesn't have the word "brevemente" either, but I'm trying to add the word to an existing bug [2].

Among many other enhancements, this version includes the word "brevemente".

We're not shipping this dictionary, seems like the issue reported is adressed in the version on AMO. Resolving FIXED.
