This is probably an enhancement request. But imo, the current interface for search filtering is so limited that robust query creation is not possible.
The Advanced Searching Using Boolean Charts: in Bugzilla queries is a fine example of how this feature should be implemented.
see attachment for sample converted bugzilla
With this improved search filtering flexibility, I can create queries that would allow me to completely step away from using folders to organize bookmarks

Someone should do this, and do the same thing for Thunderbird address books and message filters.

Bug 451915 - move Firefox/Places bugs to Firefox/Bookmarks and History. Remove all bugspam from this move by filtering for the string "places-to-b-and-h".
In Thunderbird 3.0b, you do that as follows:
Tools | Message Filters
Make sure the correct account is selected. Click "New"
Conditions: Body contains places-to-b-and-h
Change the action to "Delete Message".
Select "Manually Run" from the dropdown at the top.
Click OK.
Select the filter in the list, make sure "Inbox" is selected at the bottom, and click "Run Now". This should delete all the bugspam. You can then delete the filter.

Component: Places → Bookmarks & History
QA Contact: places → bookmarks

this UI has gone quite some time ago, there may be plans to make a new search ui in future, but so far this is invalid now (and mostly add-ons territory)
