User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.11) Gecko/20071127 Firefox/2.0.0.11 Build Identifier: 3.0.3 In the product administration section, a check box, drop-down or text box to choose whether or not a product is closed for bugs, but still show the product in the product listing page. If text box, then whatever is in the text box will be displayed on the product page as the reason for the product being closed. Right now if an admin closes a product for bug entry, it removes it from the product list thereby making it look as if the product no longer exists. This, however, would change the look of the product in the product listing. Perhaps the name of the product is a strike-through and/or the backdrop color is grey, etc. This would indicate the product exists, but is closed for bug entry. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.

personally, i consider this the wrong approach. imo the logic should be entirely limited to the template file. that said, i'm offering this as something that could be used while we discuss product flags or params.

No, if the product is closed for entry, it should just disappear. Some people have many many products and their old products just shouldn't appear in the list.

we've actually had this problem @bmo, when a product disappeared, people did all sorts of random things. having a way to show them the product with a comment saying "you should file your bugs in X" is actually very useful.
Comment on attachment 299807 [details] [diff] [review] this could work I agree with Max that we don't want to see all the "old" products being listed when choosing a product. If the list of closed products is long enough, it would make it very hard to see active ones.

did you actually look at the patch? it doesn't make them appear in any normal path, you have to choose __any. You guys are really not thinking about this stuff correctly. bugzilla should be a platform. the platform should enable the deployments to *choose* how they want the ui to work. if they want to show this, they should be able to. the right place for logic like this (deciding what to show) is in the templates, *not* in the cgis. I'm perfectly fine with not having any template path that actually *does* show disabled components as long as anyone who wants to can simply write a *template* that *does* show them. But today it requires hacking the cgi, which is a layer violation.
What timeless is saying is what I'm trying to say as well. For some, the ability to modify a template to allow you to pick and choose which should be available but struck out, *or*, removed entirely. I can see old products going away. No need for them, everyone knows they are gone. Others need the ability to have products listed but disabled for whatever reason. End users do weird things when they can't find their product or what they were used to working on without some sort of explanation.
