Maybe we could instead use a globe with high opacity applied uniformly, so it's faded when loading and becomes the normal, full-colored globe (or site icon) when done? Dunno. Filing this so that we have a place to collect ideas, and if we find a really good one, we can implement it.
Created attachment 310694 [details] faded globe This is basically comment 0; it's faded and slightly desaturated so that it looks ghostly. I think it does a better job of conveying the idea than the current icon (and should therefore be less likely to be interpreted as a mistake), so I'm all for landing this for b3. (I tried some variations that were totally desaturated, but then it was too much grey on grey next to another circle of grey on grey.)
