420130 - Create policy for adding news items to mozilla.org

We should determine what news items should get posted to the Announcements section on mozilla.org as well as determine who decides and who makes those changes.  AFAIK, there currently isn't any process or anyone who owns the news page.

For example, the recent Mozilla Messaging announcement was posted on mozilla.com and mozillamessaging.com but hasn't been posted yet on mozilla.org.  Maybe it doesn't need to be if we're showing feeds from other news sources on the home page?  As of today this announcement hasn't shown up on any of those featured feeds though, so we can consider adding other feeds (perhaps getting a news feed from mozilla.com and mozillamessaging.com for an official press release section?)

If we are pulling in news by feeds, what announcements, if any, need to get manually added to the news.html file?  I think it would be worthwhile to have news from across the community posted on mozilla.org, but that would require someone sorting through and posting news manually if an appropriate feed doesn't already exist.

Also, any changes we make to how we post news might change the news archive.  For instance, if we pull in a feed from mozilla.com's announcements do we need the hard-coded mozilla.com announcements currently on news.html?

With the recent changes to the top-level navigation and footer links on www.mozilla.org, we're no longer linking directly to Planet on the home page.  I think we could add a link as part of any news feeds we're showing on the home page (for example, having a 'Read more community blogs' link pointing to Planet).  So maybe we have two needs feeds on the home page (instead of the current three) -- one News and Announcements feed (with a mozillaZine feed plus news items posted on news.html) and a Community Blogs feed.  Thoughts?

Our news policy has been sorted out and when we go live with the new design we're going to have just one news section on the home page that will automatically pull updates from the about:mozilla.org newsletter.  We'll also have the ability to post our own items to this area and the planning group will decide when and what to post.  For old news items on www.mozilla.org, I'd recommend archiving those to www-archive.mozilla.org.
