Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; en-US; rv:1.9b5) Gecko/2008032619 Firefox/3.0b5 This is happening to me as well. View screenshot at http://www.paradigm-reborn.com/firefox.png
I believe I was able to track this problem down on my systems at least: purging pango-graphite from my Debian amd64 box running unstable fixed the problem for me.
Excellent!! worked for me as well, thanks so much, though this is still clearly a problem of course, a temporary solution is great!
Purging pango-graphite is working on my Debian/lenny i686 Box also. Thank you Chris.
The only way I can imagine this happening within the Graphite engine itself is if justification got turned on somehow.
I have been having a similar issue with spacing. I was able to isolate this issue to having an old version of Arial installed on my computer (Mac OS X). I was able to delete the old Arial font file and replace it with a new version and it resolved the problem. I just posted a detailed blog post about it at http://www.createarevolution.com/blog/2008/07/07/my-text-spacing-problem-in-firefox-3/
Thanks we had the same problem, removing pango-graphite worked for us.
So the removal of pango-graphite solved the problem for everyone on Linux?
