User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.12) Gecko/20080201 Firefox/2.0.0.12 Build Identifier: Penelope/Eudora/Thunderbird PET 8.0.0b3 Firstly, the intructions for build identifier don't work. You can't cut-n-paste the version from about menu. And the about menu still says Eudora. A bit of an identity crisis with this product? mozilla's starting to sound like a gov't operation. Using IMAP and SSL-SMTP and my ISP says to use their domain name for IMAP and the domain they host for me for SMTP-SSL. Well PET doesn't like that the same cert is used by both domains. Sylpheed has an option to accept the cert anyway. Another related problem. When I tried to import the cert via Tools->Options->Advanced->certs->View certs->Add exception that is broken I get errors only when trying to import that way. What I finally did was... install the add-on that allows one to export certs should one want to then connect via ffox and export the cert then import into PET. Then I had to select the cert and sy "Trust this". That at least got IMAP to work....for a little while. But then the "Trust this" part reverted and so I had to say "Trust this" again. All in all a big mess. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.
I have a similar problem: After downloading and installing Eudora 8.0.0b3, I tried the pop configuration (port 995 with SSL), and the smtp configuration (port 587 with username/password authentication and STARTTLS), and I always get the following error message: An error occurred during a connection to <server>:995 (or <server>:587) because it uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate is not trusted or its issuer certificate is invalid. (sec_error_unknown_issuer) I unistalled the beta and installed Thunderbird+penelope instead, and with the same pop/smtp configuration, it now works (Thunderbird still warns about the certificate, but at least it gives me the option to accept it).
I suspect that something broke between the code that Thunderbird uses and the code that Eudora 8 uses. Eudora 8 (Penelope) is based on the TRUNK mozilla code, while Thunderbird is not. The fact that Thunderbird + the Penelope extension works supports this hypothesis. It might be better to file this against the TRUNK mozilla code instead of Penelope as it might be looked at sooner that way.
I just unistalled Thunderbird+penelope and reinstalled Eudora 8, and now it works, so it seems that the bug is in Eudora 8 ---i.e., preventing the certificate from being accepted; but once it's in the profile settings as accepted, Eudora works just fine.
I am going to close this as I have not been able to reproduce the problem, nor have I heard other reports of this. Feel free to re-open or enter a new bug if you see this problem again.
