User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X; it; rv:1.8.1.13pre) Gecko/20080304 Camino/1.6b3pre (like Firefox/2.0.0.13pre) Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X; it; rv:1.8.1.13pre) Gecko/20080304 Camino/1.6b3pre (like Firefox/2.0.0.13pre) The string "Feed Handler" is redundant here (and, besides, it gave me some translation headaches), since the option label already explain what the items are. It might be more explanatory and useful to say that these are websites instead of desktop applications. In case of services which have their own names (like My Yahoo!), we might want to use these names instead of the vendor one. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.

It might be more explanatory and useful to say that these are websites > instead of desktop applications. I thought we had discussion of this in bug 355748, but I guess not. The one place where dropping "Feed Handler" really falls apart is Google, because now you have something that just says "Google", which doesn't match the service name at all (it actually passes the feeds to either iGoogle or Google Reader). > In case of services which have their own names (like My Yahoo!), we might want > to use these names instead of the vendor one. I don't understand; we do call it "My Yahoo!"
Sorry, for Yahoo I picked the wrong example. I was actually thinking about Google stuff and didn't look up what was happening with Yahoo (I remembered I tweaked all the 3 names while localizing). That leaves us with the chance to remove the redundant string for Bloglines and My Yahoo! and the need to think about what to do with Google. I can't understand from comments to bug 355748 if it's feasible to have 2 separate items for iGoogle and G. Reader (which are actually separate applications). If it's not possible, I suggest we turn Google's services string into "Google Reader / iGoogle". That gives more precise info about where we're going, even if the landing page is actually a... er... feed handler. Any ideas about a mark to identify web applications from desktop ones?

I don't know if there are actually separate URLs we could use; Google has asked everyone to use the landing page URL we use (see the fun that is bug 357371). They also promised a server-side pref to remember user choice, but apparently that hasn't been implemented or isn't working. > Any ideas about a mark to identify web applications from desktop ones? I really don't see the need for a specific marking, personally (although the "Feed Handler" text does sort-of imply that distinction, to me). Aside from Bloglines, won't everyone recognize Google and Yahoo are websites? Do users really care? If we do change something here, we should do so in the next day or so, before b3, so we can have all the late-l10ns wrapped up in that build.

It looks from bug 357371 that's Google's preference. I agree that we could axe "Feed Handler" everywhere; since these apps are inside the Camino bundle, it's likely that the only time a user would ever encounter them is within the context of something that lets them choose a feed handler.

Checked in on the trunk and MOZILLA_1_8_BRANCH before b3. Marcello, will you please pass this late-l10n on the the localizers?

Also, in case anyone grabs 1.6b3 and wonders: you may have to clear out all of your old copies, or kick LaunchServices, or something, to get them to say "Bloglines" instead of "Bloglines Feed Handler" in the menu.
