Maemo applications, mobile Nokia n810, for example, have a native alert system (they call them banners). The banners are designed for use on smaller screens and could be used to implement nsIAlertsService on the Hildon platform. Supporting the Hildon banner is a somewhat important (really nice to have feature) for any Mozilla mobile work on that platform, from a widget standpoint.

The above link might be helpful. It is using gtk, and not anything hildon specific.
Does the XUL Dialogs not work well for what you are trying to do?

They could be made to work, but that's why we have nsIAlertsService.
In fact, dialogs would be more of a pain. Popping up <panel> would be the simplest non-alerts service way to go.
