User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-GB; rv:1.9b4) Gecko/2008030714 Firefox/3.0b4
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-GB; rv:1.9b4) Gecko/2008030714 Firefox/3.0b4
When the scroll position is scrolled so that no part of the youtube video is showing on screen, after letting go of the scroll wheel, and trying to scroll again, the scroll position will jump back to the top of the video.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Navigate to any youtube video, for example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2SGIzjgXzI
2.Scroll past video while it is in the play state.
3.Stop scrolling.
4.Start to scroll again.
Actual Results:
The scroll position will jump back up to the top.
Expected Results:
The scroll position should continue from where the user has previously scrolled up to.
Not sure if this has to do with the focus of the youtube flash player? No doubt.

After doing a bit more testing, it seems it happens only after the video is paused and then started to play again. I'm guess that the flash code is asking for focus, and the browser is committing that focus only when a scroll starts?

Summary: Scrolling past youtube video while playing makes the scroll position jump when turned for a second time. → Scrolling past youtube video while playing makes the scroll position jump when scrolled for a second time.
This also happens to me on most sites that include some sort of flash video player. I am running FireFox 3 Beta 4 currently. I can only make it happen when i scroll using the virtual scroll wheel on my touch pad. If I use the scroll bar on the window, then it works fine.

I can't reproduce this and I've seen a lot of You Tube movies. Additional steps to reproduce?

Will second the fact that it seems to happen only on my trackpad, but not on a mouse with a standard scroll wheel.
Additional instructions:
1. Go to any youtube movie.
2. Wait for the movie to load and start playing.
3. Pause it then play it again.
4. Scroll past the flash object's bounds, and stop scrolling once it is off the screen.
5. Try to start scrolling again.
The scroll position will jump right back to where the top bound of the flash object is every second scroll.

Eric, what OS are you running?
Can somebody confirm this in a non Windows environment? That would rule out drivers, and leave us with Flash or Firefox as the issue. I doubt that the drivers and Flash are likely to blame anyway though, due to the fact that this is not an issue in IE or Safari.

I am running Windows Vista SP1 unfortunately. I bet that is the real reason why this is happening. ; )

I'm Vista SP1 too, though I can definitely say this was happening pre service pack.
I'm putting it down to either the shoddy synaptic drivers, or a small bug in the Firefox focus handling.

You know, now that you mention it, I too am running synaptic drivers and I did see this being addressed in a different article before i came to this one. For everyone else, what drivers are you using?
this happens to me also, it is regardless of if the video is paused or playing. I am running Vista SP1 w/ the latest Synaptic drivers.

Same thing on XP Pro SP2. Scrolling works fine when using a USB scroll wheel mouse. Using the (Synaptics) touchpad's edge to scroll jump back to the flash object.

What are Italian is not familiar with the English I'm helping with a translator. I have the same problem. I discussed in Italian fourm on the site of the mozillaitalia, without finding any solution. I am reassured to know that however the problem is shared by others.

Can you confirm this is still a problem in the latest 3.7 trunk or 3.6 branch builds or does it just exist on the 3.0.x branch.
Comment 13•15 years ago
|
||
Yes, this is still reproducible on 3.5, as well as the 3.6, 3.7 nightly builds.
