Details
(Whiteboard: [more info: comment 10 and 12])
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9b5) Gecko/2008032619 Firefox/3.0b5
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9b5) Gecko/2008032619 Firefox/3.0b5
After right-clicking on a bookmark toolbar button to, for example, open a website in a new tab, all of the options are grayed out. Re-right clicking the button yields active actions. This does not appear to be dependent on the website button being clicked. This happens <10% of the time, and has always been resolved by an immediate re-click.
Reproducible: Sometimes
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open web browser.
2. Right click on bookmark toolbar button.
3. If inactive action item, re-click to activate action item.
Actual Results:
None of the action items in the right-click menu are available to select.
Expected Results:
Action items (e.g., opening the website in a new tab) should be available to select.
There are no other extensions, themes installed. The only plugins installed are the Adobe Reader 8.0 and Shockwave Flash. This has happened on both a CentOS 5.1 machine and a Fedora 8 machine.

After clicking right clicking on different bookmarks multiple times (upwards of 50, being as dedicated as I am) yielded no results similar to this report.

The inactive menu items also appear when right clicking on links from RSS feed buttons. This is also very sporadic - you can click many times without this happening, but then go on browsing a bit, and right click on a button or menu item and you can hit the inactive menu options. I tried to take a screenshot of this behavior, but can't do so while a menu is being displayed from a button.

I have a similar issue with Firefox 3 RC1 in Windows Vista and have found one set of steps to reproduce the problem. 1st right click a bookmark from the bookmark toolbar and then select 'Open in New Tab'. Close the tab using CTRL-W. Now right click the same bookmark and options should be greyed out.

The steps described above to reproduce the bug w/ 3RC1 in Windows Vista also reproduced the bug in 3.0b5 on Ubuntu 8.04.

As mentioned earlier, the error is quite sporadic;right-clicking on a live bookmark link yields a menu with all options grayed out. The solution is to click on the bookmark once again to generate the live bookmarks and then right-click again.

On Firefox 3.0b5 and 3.0rc1 (Linux / Ubuntu) I am seeing this behavior as well. This affects me significantly because my normal workflow is to pull down an RSS feed menu on the bookmark bar and right click a link to open in a new tab. I never knew why it would work sometimes and sometimes not, but using the reproduction instructions in message #3, I can reproduce 100%. Someone with authority should confirm this and mark as confirmed and also mark as cross platform (i.e. not just a Linux problem).

Thank you to Ben Anders (comment #3) for nailing a way to make this symptom reproducible; I've noticed for some time now that when using dropdown lists from the RSS feeds as items in the bookmark bar the option I was sometimes not seeing the open (in new tab or new window) menu items when right-clicking a link.
I now know the problem occurs when trying to right-click a link which has been previously opened using the RSS bookmark and then closed. If the link is opened by (eg) pasting the address in the address bar and then closed, the RSS bookmark and right click still works ok.
I'm currently using Firefox 3.0 rc1 on Ubuntu 8.04.

You can replicate this bug also by:
1. click on live bookmark button and right click and open a link in a new window
2. close the newly opened window
3. open ANY bookmark and right click on ANY link
The menu list will be grayed out.
Any ideas on how to resolve this?

Confirmed with trunk on WinXP. Moved to "Toolbars" component. Needed a confirm for Mac platforms.
Workaround: open bookmarks with mouse middle-click or with CTRL+click to open in a new tab, or SHIFT+click to open in a new window

I can't reproduce the bug with your steps, but I'm not sure I understood them well. Can you explain them more clearly?

My apologies; it seems I've confused new window with new tab.
Anyway, you dont have to right click on the SAME bookmark. ANY bookmark you right click will result in a grayed box

Yes, it happens also if you open in a new tab a bookmark in a folder or in a live bookmark on bookmarks toolbar.

I confirm. Some elements of context menu will be disabled also if you right-click on another element the first time.
Furthermore, this bug does _not_ happens if you create or close another tab before you perform the second right-click (when the context menu should be partially disabled).
Summary: right click on bookmark toolbar buttons provides inactive actions; fixed on re-click → If you right click -> open in a new tab a bookmark in bookmarks toolbar and you close the new tab, some elements of its context menu will be disabled

This also occurs on MacOS 10.5. I do not have solid reproduction steps as of yet. Not all of the menu items are gray but the three top ones dealing with "Open..." are disabled.
