User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9pre) Gecko/2008041506 Minefield/3.0pre Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9pre) Gecko/2008041506 Minefield/3.0pre As new Places, frecency and location search features take more resources to work, I think an additional option to show the dropdown menu only if the dropdown button is clicked or if the down key is pressed could be good. There's no need to search in history if I'm copy and paste an url, for example. Reproducible: Always

As an alternative, Fx could not search if string begins with [a-zA-Z]+://

if the driver for this request is resource consumption, then the right fix is use less resources, not to add a new option to disable it. that said, the awesomebar could be much smarter about detecting when it should search. this is a dupe of another bug suggesting similar solutions (don't search on paste, or if string starts w/ a scheme, etc), but i cannot find it.

I think the new async locationbar is fast enough to make this a wontfix. Also based on comment 3, a new option is not going to make it. If in future history will be partitioned, then that could happen automatically, but that's another thing.
