Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; en-US; rv:1.9b5) Gecko/2008032619 Firefox/3.0b5
When a document is served as application/xhtml+xml to satisfy the W3C validator (and presumably the underlying spec) it is no longer possible to copy it as rich text (eg into Gmail) - formatting is lost and it is pasted as plain text.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Browse to document served as application/xhtml+xml (eg http://svn.cacert.org/CAcert/Policies/OrganisationAssurancePolicy/OrganisationAssuranceSubPolicyAustralia.html)
2. Copy formatted text
3. Paste to rich text field (eg Gmail compose window)
Actual Results:
Plain text is pasted
Expected Results:
Formatted text is pasted
Verified on subversion server by comparing results with 'svn propset svn:mime-type "text/html" $1' and 'svn propset svn:mime-type "application/xhtml+xml" $1'

This actually happens to me when copying any formatted text. It pastes as non-formatted plain text.
Very annoying!

I have exactly the same boring problem. Maybe a OS bug ? (Mac OS 10.4.11).

I have the same annoying problem with Thunderbird on WinXP. Copying rich text from an email to a wordperfect doc/staroffice doc results in plain text. It is so annoying, that I have reverted to Outlook (uggh).

That may be true lynn but I don't think you're a victim of /this/ bug specifically - you may like to see if you can find the offending issue, or file a new one.

Hi,
Exatly the same problem appears also on a French version for Max OS X and for FF3.0.

Agreed, it's present in FF3 and is likely language independent. Seems to be related to the storage of the content-type with the clipboard data based on mime-type.
This should work if people are to be encouraged to comply to the standards (eg XHTML served with the correct mime-type).

If it can help, I can make the copy/paste experiment on the same web page with Safari, and it's working well (pasting formatted plein text in MS world as I want)

I have the same problem. I have Mac OS 10.5.3, and Firefox 3, and when copy and pasting into Word 2008 from Firefox, it comes across as plain text, instead of being formatted.
Safari works well though, so it is either live with it until they fix it, or change to Safari :-S
Same as bug 428096?

I am hoping to raise the attention and importance of this issue and hopefully get the HTML, styl, rtf, img function of the Firefox clipboard finally fixed.
Thanks for helping.

I have seem to have an issue something like this old thread.
A cut and paste action (of an HTML table) into Gmail initially looks OK but when either sent or saved as draft and re-opened, formatting is gone.
Using Gmail in Chrome or Safari to do the same (using the same Gmail account) works OK and this is a task I've been doing weekly in Firefox for a long time. Updated last week to Firefox 36.
