This article request is a LITTLE tongue in cheek but it's like an hourly question on #firefox and we get it quite a lot in LiveChat.
A quick two paragraphs discussing the release process and linking to http://wiki.mozilla.org/Releases is probably plenty.

Tongue-in-cheek or not, I definitely have seen this question asked more than once and think it would provide a better experience for the people who are searching for Firefox 3 ("firefox 3" has been part of top 10 searched terms on sumo for weeks now).

This is really not the right way to solve this problem. This article will also have to be rewritten (and given a new title) as soon as Firefox 3 is out.
We should have an article about updating firefox, why it's important, how to tell if there's an update, and how to find out when the next update will be. If the goal is to make this article come up in the results for "firefox 3" then we can say "the next major release will be firefox 3" somewhere in the article.
I'm inclined to delete it as soon as Firefox is out.
It's not the right solution, sure, but it's a common question and we don't have a FAQ section.

We already have an "Upgrading to Firefox 3" article.
<http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Upgrading+to+Firefox+3>
I agree with having this article. When Firefox 3 is out, it can be changed to say that Firefox has been released. Here's where to get it. And we can delete when Firefox 2 reaches EOL.
WRT the current content, I think we can streamline it. We don't need to describe the release process. Start with a line about "When it's ready", then quote beltzner's blog post (with a link), and finish it off with how to know when it is released.
I put in the stuff about the release process to address the related question "Beta 5/Current nightly works great for me, what's the hold up?" Also because "When it's ready" is a really frustrating answer without context and I'm against frustrating users.

That's why I am saying to keep the quote from beltzner. It should cover the "when it's read" frustration factor, as well as explain the hold up.
What if we have a bigger article about Future Releases of Firefox. We can still include the content that cww put in. It might include something like, small stuff, like 2.0.0.14, and big things like, Firefox 3. Once Firefox 3 is released we could do a small part about not releasing any more patches for Firefox 2, and that Firefox 3 is released. Then describe some upcoming patches for Firefox 3 and then Firefox 4.
It could even include the fancy chart like <http://people.mozilla.com/~cbeard/roadmap/moz-roadmap-2007-v0.2.png>.
