feature request for the preferences dialog

Details
It would be really nice to add an "Apply" button to the preferences dialog box,
and then change the behavior of that dialog so that it does not grab focus.
This would allow you to update your font and color selections interactively,
without having to re-open and close the preferences window repeatedly as you try
out things.

oops, I just noticed bug 42339, which appears to have handled this.
The only thing I can't tell from the discussion there is whether they've
handled the focus issue.
